Loretta Lux is an amazing fine art photographer, and is known for her surreal photos of children. She uses a combination of photography, digital manipulation, and painting in her works.
At first glance, in my opinion, the photos seemed boring and simple. This however is far from what I feel after studying her work more extensively. Even though these photos may look simple, it is amazing how they can evoke such a discomforting emotion in me. I think the reason these photos make me feel uncomfortable is that they are of children looking, in most of them, uneasy.
i agree - they are uncomfortable. i can see you being drawn to this work after your discussion of HDR - there is a similar approach to the surreal lighting that adds drama but also a tension of real/unreal.
